Guinevere: The Dawn of Legend by Author Cheryl Carpinello

"Think before acting," her father always warned. But Princess Guinevere is ruled by her heart. Her betrothal to King Arthur has not changed this.

When Guinevere and Cedwyn's latest adventure takes a dangerous turn, they find themselves embroiled in a life-or-death struggle as foretold by Merlyn's Goddess of the Stones.

Renegades--foiled in their attempt to kidnap the princess--steal the children of Cadbury Castle to sell as slaves. Guinevere and Cedwyn vow to rescue the children, but a miscalculation puts them all in more danger. The plan quickly unravels, and Guinevere's impassioned decisions come crashing down as Cedwyn chooses to turn his dream of becoming a knight into reality. Will their courage be strong enough to survive, or will one make the ultimate sacrifice?"

Character Casting
Brynwyn: Cedwyn’s mother. She has cared for Guinevere since the age of 4 when the Queen died.
Cedwyn let out a yelp and ran into Ma’s open embrace. Her strong arms threatened to squeeze the breath out of him. Guinevere stayed but a moment, and then joined him as Brynwyn opened up a space for her. Brynwyn first grabbed her son’s face between her rough hands, and then Guinevere’s, as if checking to be sure they were really in front of her and not an illusion….
A whack echoed in the courtyard followed by a cry that sounded like a wounded animal. Silence followed. Cedwyn stood there, his hand trying to cover his bright red cheek….
“Where have you been? Do you think you can just wander off whenever you want to?” Brynwyn stood with clenched fists on her broad hips. Her body shook as she turned to Guinevere.

Cedwyn (Said-when): 11 years old. Loyal life-long friend of Guinevere. When he was just learning to talk he couldn’t pronounce Guinevere so he called her Guin’ver (Gwen fer).
Staring into the dark, he waited and listened….
Sitting there he remembered their adventures. The unicorns, the painted dragon, King Pellinore, the bratchet, and the wild boar. Even though they’d feared for their lives after Guinevere’s arrow accidentally ended up in the boar’s side, it was a childish fear, not real. This was real….
Cedwyn wiped a tear from his eye and squared his shoulders. He turned to gaze at Guinevere, still asleep on the ground beside him. He wondered if he would see her again.

Guinevere: 15 years old. Still a princess as her marriage to Arthur has been postponed until the fighting is finished.
High up on the castle’s parapet, a slender figure stared north, oblivious to the frequent gusts of wind. Tendrils of brown hair escaped from the cowl of a dark green cloak and whirled around the figure’s head. A nasty gale whipped off the hood, revealing the worry-lined face of a young princess—hollowed cheeks streaked with tears and dark circles smudged under her amber eyes.

King Arthur: Son of Uther Pendragon. Perhaps the greatest and most well-known king of Medieval England, known as The Once and Future King.
From a corner of the room, a man stepped forward. His young face stern, concern etched in his wrinkled brow. He whistled softy as he ran a hand through jet black hair.

King Leodegrance: (Leo-day-grants): Guinevere’s father.
She heard his heavy breathing, felt each boot hit the floor as he left his desk. His fingers bit into the soft skin of her shoulders.
“Look at me.”
She forced herself to meet his eyes. The fingers tightened. She winced at the pain….
Guinevere ran from the room, fists clenched, tears streaming down her face….
King Leodegrance’s shoulders hunched over as he fell into his chair, his head in his hands.

Merlyn: A wizard who—according to Legend—hid the young Arthur away until it was time for him to take over as the ruler of England (Britain). He lives backwards in time and has a long white beard.

Queen Roslyn: Guinevere’s mother who died when Guinevere was 4.

Seren Brenin: King Arthur’s retired war horse as black as the night. A gift to Guinevere, the name is Welsh and means King’s Star. This story can be found in the short book Guardian of a Princess and other shorts.

3. Fathers and Daughters:
His finger on her lips stopped her rebuttal.
“Not now. Other issues demand the attention of the knights and kings.”…
“But Father…I promised.”
“So you did, daughter mine, but kings must rule with their heads not their hearts. This discussion is over. You are dismissed to go to your room. I have a knight there who will make sure your rest tonight isn’t disturbed.”
Her legs refused to move. She opened her mouth, but no words came.
“Go. Now Guinevere. Before I forget you’re my own flesh and have you flogged for the dangers you’ve brought upon us. Go!”
Guinevere ran from the room, fists clenched, tears streaming down her face.

I’m a retired high school English teacher. A devourer of books growing up, my profession introduced me to writings and authors from times long past. Through my studies and teaching, I fell in love with the Ancient and Medieval Worlds. Now, I hope to inspire young readers and those Young-at-Heart to read more through my Tales and Legends for Reluctant Readers set in these worlds—Ancient Egypt, Medieval Wales, and coming soon, a hair-raising adventure through ancient worlds in search of 5 rare Phoenix Feathers.

All of my books come with Free study guides and/or extensive Back-of-the-Book materials.

My husband and I love to travel. In 2008, we spent three weeks in Egypt traveling by local train from one end of the country to the other; in 2014, we spent three weeks in the UK driving over 1700 miles through England, Wales, and Scotland; and in 2016, we spent a week in Iceland. We’ve also traveled to Mexico, Jamaica, and Aruba. Our next big adventure will be to Greece and Italy.

When I’m not writing or traveling, our 4 grandkids keep us busy.
